Stay Active This Coming January With These 3 Outdoor Activities

We hear it all the time from clients: “Year after year, I pack on weight from December to March. If only I could...”

A lot of people struggle with the winter blues; feeling unhappy with themselves (and their bodies) because they’re not able to play outside, and get vitamin D from natural sunlight. Usually they find themselves eating out of boredom because they’re “stuck” inside.

“It’s too cold!” is not an excuse anymore to stay indoors all winter. Nowadays we have plenty of technology to keep us from freezing in middle of January (and February, and March, ugh!).

So, with your newfound permission to go outside once every other snowfall, what can you do to stay active during these colder months?

Skiing & Snowboarding

A traditional-ish family pastime that can keep you occupied for the entire day. A lot of mountains have (COVID-safe) lessons for all ages and skill levels.

Of course, the best part of skiing and snowboarding is hanging in the lodge once you’re too tired to go on.

Shovel

“You want me to what!?” Yes, go shovel.

Make sure to warm up your body first! If you know the Fit Source system, aim for something hips, shoulders, back and ankles. If you’re new to us, drop us a line and we’ll gladly send you a pre-shoveling warm up.

Then, go crazy! Be sure to lift with your hips and not your back. You’ll be sweating in no time.

Walk & Hike

As long as there’s not 3 feet of snow on the ground, going for a quick walk around the neighborhood is a simple way to ensure you’re actually going outside in the winter.

If you can find a mountain that’s safe for winter hiking, go for it! Watch out for polar bears.

It can seem like you’re a slave to the couch in the winter, but it doesn’t have to be that way. You can start to make progress during the colder months with the right ideas, tools and help.

You can take control of what you do with your body! Decide what you’re ready, willing and able to do then take action.

Of course, if you need help, don’t hesitate to ask! Talk to a professional coach or phone a friend; they’re probably in the same boat (or warm, cozy cabin) as you!
